Scientific Overview

Originally developed as a modification of Eagle's Minimum Essential Medium with increased amino acid and vitamin concentrations, DMEM High Glucose provides an elevated glycolytic energy source that supports the high metabolic demands of many immortalized and transformed cell lines. It is typically supplemented with fetal bovine serum, L-glutamine, and antibiotics before use.

DMEM High Glucose Medium is a widely used basal cell culture medium containing 4.5 g/L D-glucose along with amino acids, vitamins, inorganic salts, and other nutrients, formulated to support the growth of a broad range of adherent and suspension mammalian cell lines.

Peer Queries & FAQs
What does 'High Glucose' mean in DMEM's name?
It refers to a D-glucose concentration of 4.5 g/L, versus the 'low glucose' DMEM formulation at 1.0 g/L; the higher glucose level supports faster-growing or more metabolically demanding cell lines.
Does DMEM contain serum or antibiotics?
No, base DMEM is a defined basal formulation; serum (commonly FBS), L-glutamine, and antibiotics are added separately by the end user according to their specific cell culture protocol.
What cell types is DMEM High Glucose best suited for?
It is broadly used for many adherent immortalized and transformed cell lines, including HEK293, HeLa, CHO, and various fibroblast lines.
What is the recommended storage condition?
Store liquid medium at 2-8°C protected from light; use within the manufacturer's stated shelf life and avoid repeated freeze-thaw if frozen aliquots are used.
