As a stronger detergent than cholate (owing to one fewer hydroxyl group), sodium deoxycholate more aggressively disrupts lipid membranes, making it effective for both cell lysis/protein extraction protocols and, in its purified injectable form (as deoxycholic acid), for adipocyte membrane disruption in cosmetic submental fat reduction treatments.
Sodium Deoxycholate is the sodium salt of deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile acid formed by bacterial 7a-dehydroxylation of cholic acid, widely used as an anionic detergent for cell lysis, membrane protein extraction, and as an FDA-approved injectable for submental fat reduction.
